Liz’s Story

My grandparents immigrated to Port Sunlight from Ireland in the early 1900’s. They were from farming families in the parish of Kilmer in County Wexford. In Port Sunlight my Grandfather James was lucky enough to work at the Port Sunlight soap factory for Lord Leverhulme who was very forward thinking in building a beautiful village providing good schools, recreation and homes for the workers. My mother Mary had a happy childhood as the second youngest of 12 children and after meeting my Dad, John, a recent immigrant himself from Baltinglass in County Wicklow Ireland, they married and after there first child Sally was born, took the plunge to immigrate to Australia on assisted passage of £10 in 1950.
