Ella’s Story

My mother immigrated in 1947 from India. Her parents were Anglo-Indian and so had to leave when India gained independence in 1947. Not having a place, India or Britain, as an Anglo-Indian, was hard for a family of 6.

I was born in England and am British, yet, growing up in the a mainly white area of the north has always made me feel ‘different’ and ‘other’. I am now 40; it is only through age and experience that I have been able to feel at home and a part of life in England.
