Theresa’s Story

After Kenyan independence from the British Empire, Kenya wanted to Africanise the country and any non-natives were asked to leave, which included the African-Asians. We were Indian, orginating in Goa which was under Portuguese rule. My father, having been born in Kenya, and holding a British passport, decided to make a new life for himself and his family and emigrate to the UK. In 1965, my father came over on his own and a year later was followed by my mother and three out of the five children. My older brother and I were placed in boarding schools in India until it was feasible for all of us to reunite as a family. I moved to the UK when I was 9 in 1969, 50 years ago, and have lived here since.
