The British Library

1509 – 1603

As early as the reign of Edward III (1327-1377) a distinction was made between ‘natural born’ and ‘alien’ residents in England, with the latter paying higher subsidies. Through letters of denization and acts of naturalization foreign-born people could obtain the same or similar rights as those born in England. This document lists the names of people who received letters of denization and acts of naturalization between 1509 and 1603 and the reasons for being given them.
